Music and Family

I was really excited when this blog assignment was announced because my family has a very long history of music, starting with my parents.  Growing up in the 80s, my parents were exposed to arguably some of the greatest music of all time.  For this assignment, I chose to interview my mom, and it was a great excuse just to learn more about her history of music.

(sorry for the lack of video I didn't know the best way to go about this)

Here is a picture of my mom to put a face to a voice

My Mom is Puerto Rican, so growing up, she listened to music genres called merengue and salsa.  Salsa and merengue are both very popular styles of music in Puerto Rico, so it is no surprise that she was listening to these styles growing up.  While she grew up in the 80s rock music was super popular, and my grandfather was American so he would play this music for my mom as well.

Here is an example of 80s rock.  This music is still popular and relevant to this day.

Here is an example of a popular Puerto Rican salsa song from the 80s

My Mom also currently likes classical music to relax because listening to pop songs with words is distracting.  My Mom has been in orchestras bands and marching bands since middle school, and she also played piano before anything else.  She plays flute, baritone, and euphonium.

Here is an example of some relaxing classical music.

This blog post assignment has been really fun being able to talk to my Mom about not only music but some of her experiences, including music.  Learning some of my culture as a Puerto Rican is also really cool.  Hearing about how music has changed so much, and how my mom's music interests have changed is really interesting.  I think music is a way people can connect whether it be playing music together or just talking about the music has brought me closer to my Mom.  Learning how my mom has experienced music as a musician is a way we connected because we both had similar musical backgrounds regarding playing instruments and singing in a choir, and the kind of music we like shows how similar we really are.  My Mom was not a music major, so I don't know how she could be so involved while getting a degree in a totally different field of study.

  1. Hey Jude!! I really enjoyed listening to some of your mom's favorite music. Livin' on a Prayer is such a good song. A karaoke battle to that song would be so much fun. I also loved listening to Busca el Ritmo. The beat is so much fun, and I'm sure a blast to dance to as well! Thanks for sharing!!

  2. This was such a wholesome read. Your mom sounds like an absolute legend! I love how her music taste blends both her Puerto Rican roots and that classic 80s rock vibe. Also, major respect for all the instruments she plays.

  3. Hello Jude! All of the songs that your Mother mentioned were all enjoyable! I love her diverse music taste and it reminds me a lot about my own music taste. I believe people who are able to be open minded when it comes to music are the best kinds of people!

  4. Hey Jude, it's fascinating that your mom is Puerto Rican! I would like to know if she talks to you in Spanish. I know Merengue as well, and it's something that we usually dance back home. I love listening to it and dancing to it; it's fun when you know how to. The song that you put, as well as some Puerto Rican music, is salsa! That's also something my family used to listen and dance to. Which Merengue song is your mom's favorite? One of my favorites is " La Dueña del Swing " or " Suavemente "; those are fun to dance to! :)

  5. Hey Jude! I love your post! As someone from Spain, I find so fascinating that you've heard about Salsa. It's something really common back home. Your mom's story reminded me if my own family; we also have a mix of musical influences. I think it's amazing how, even though we grew up in different places, the music from that time had such a huge impact on both sides of the ocean. I really relate to what you said about music bringing you closer to your family.
